Defending European Mixed Curling Champions, Scotland, got off to the perfect start as they defeated Poland 13-1 in the first session of play at the European Mixed Curling Championship 2013 taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Following technical issues which delayed the start of the Championship, play got underway at 21:00 today.

Scotland set up their victory in the first end as their skip, Ewan MacDonald, drew to the four foot for four points.

Thereafter, Scotland scored another nine points in the next five ends, with Poland only managing to score a single point in the fifth end before conceding after six ends were played.

Afterwards, Scotland skip, Ewan MacDonald, said: "That was great. I think the difficulty they (the Ice Technicians) have had with the plant and the ice they've made a cracking job of it. The ice is great, really nice pace and curl, so if it stays like that we'll be happy." He added: "The guys played great tonight, really solid. We were pretty much under control and it was great to get a win under the belt at the start. It's always nice wearing Scotland on your back and hopefully we'll continue to get the support throughout the week and hopefully we can keep the fans happy with a few wins."

Elsewhere, Germany defeated France 7-2 in seven ends by in large thanks to a score of three points in the first end, as well as steals of single points in the fourth and seventh ends.

The Czech Republic defeated Belarus by the same scoreline in seven ends, the key turning point coming in fifth end when the Czech Republic stole three points.

Austria sealed their win against Italy thanks to four stolen points, three points in the sixth end and another single point in the seventh end, before Italy conceded in the eighth end with the final scoreline 8-3.

Turkey meanwhile fought back in their game against Denmark to level the game at 7-7 after a steal of one point in the eighth end.
