In the only tie-breaker of the European Mixed Curling Championship 2013, being held in Edinburgh, Scotland, Slovakia made history as they qualified for the Quarter-finals of this Championship for the first time.

They defeated Italy 7-2 in seven ends to proceed straight into the Quarter-finals where they will meet Germany at 19:00, later today.

In the first end Slovakia managed to steal one point after Italy skip, Federica Apollonio, wrecked with her last stone as she attempted to draw against three counting Slovakian stones in the eight foot.

In the second end, Slovakia skip, Pavol Pitonak, made a hit and rolled out with his last stone leaving Italy a draw to the eight foot for two points. However that came up short giving Italy only one point.

The third end was blanked by Slovakia before they went on to take two points and go into the fourth end break 3-1 up.

In the fifth end, Italy had to draw against three counting Slovakian stones but again came up short giving Slovakia a steal of three points and a crucial advantage.

The sixth and seventh ends saw Italy and Slovakia exchange single points giving a score of 7-2 to Slovakia at after which Italy conceded.

After the game Pavol Pitonak, the Slovakian skip, said: “The team played very well. We got quite lucky in the fifth and that was the game changer. This is the first time a Slovakian team has made the Quarter-finals so we are very proud.”
